The 1982 World's Fair, officially called the Knoxville International Energy Exposition, was held May 1 through October 31, 1982. The 70-acre fairgrounds were built on the old Louisville and Nashville railyard and depot, though part of the campus of the University of Tennessee was also used. Though quite successful, the World's Fair failed to bring the growth organizers and local officials sought. The exposition held in , two years later, didn't "fair" as well.
